Title: Spitfire Information Needed
Post by: 3foldcord67 on November 09, 2011, 07:30:56 AM
Hello everyone,

Forgive my ignorance...  but were there any RAF airbases OUTSIDE of England where they flew Spitfires from in WW2?   If so, would you know what years they were operational?   Looking for any bases that might have been located in France operated by RAF or Allied Forces.

Thank you in advance for your help!   ;D

There were several; the first was "B3" at St.-Croix-sur-Mer, which was occupied by 144 Wing from June 10th., 1944. "RAF Squadrons," by Wingco Jefford, lists 115 airfields in Northern France, but doesn't say which Squadrons used them.

There were numerous bases outside of the UK that operated Spitfires throughout the war.

Probably the first base in France where Spitfires (or more correctly a single Spitfire (N3071)) were operated from was Lille/Seclin. The Special Survey Flight operated from here during Nov 39. They also used Coulommiers, Bar-le-Duc (forward base) and Nancy in the same period.

More widespread use of Spitfires outside of the UK started in 1942 when they began to filter through to North Africa and Malta.

Best Regards

Second Tactical Air Force Vol 4 C.Shores &  C.Thomas lists all the squadrons in 2nd TAF and the bases they used with dates. Too many to list here as they moved frequently.
