Title: First Post - c/w Awkward Question

Hi everybody,
I'm currently engaged in a project to build an example of every Variant (and Sub Variant) of the Spitfire in 1/48th Scale, and I have made great progress, producing all but a couple (I have an FR18 in the to do pile).  The stumbling block is the Contra Rotating Propeller fitted to the few examples.  Page 58 of 'Great Aircraft of WWII - Supermarine Spitfre' by Alfred Price (ISBN 978-1-86147-210-6) shows what I believe to be a 22, with a PK Serial Block...the numerials appear to be 684 - can anyone confirm this?

Several F 22s were equipped with contra-rotating propellers. PK684, Griffon 87, had a six-blade de Havilland contr-rotating propeller installed by Feb 1946 before being converted to a F.24. PK312 had a similar installation driven by a Griffon 85 and A Spiteful type tail in Sept 1946.

That fixes the serial for me - looks like another Airfix F22 purchase is in order (plus an Aeroclub prop ;D)

I've yet to attempt the Photo Recce versions, that is another kettle of fish!  Hopefully, this will wet your appetite:

You had it right- PK684, not 694 (and not 664, as the photo in Spit the Hist is captioned).  A number of 21s were flown for some time with contra, but AFAIK the installation on Mk.22 was only a short-term trial installation.

p.s. Please don't be offended, but there is more to a Mk.XII nose than adding some bumps to a Mk.V cowl- for one thing, the prop turns the other direction!

Bob - Thanx for that - BTW, I'm not offended - apart from the prop, what else needs to be done? (mind you, how do I reverse the direction on the blades :-[)

Unfortunately (or fortunately- much simpler than the alternative), by getting a new prop!

Bob - any idea where (do Aeroclub do them)? (Many TX BTW)

Aeroclub makes a Spitfire XII conversion with a new fuselage and prop.
