I am looking for squadron codes for the spitfires flown by South African pilot Brian Van Mentz during the BOB, particularly late BOB around  September and 222 sq..  It appears that he flew the following MK1 spitfires: P9542, L1089, P9492, P9628, X4540, R6837, and X4089. I have no idea if he had a favorite or assigned aircraft. Van Mentz was a friend of RS Tuck and on April 26 he was at the Ferry in w/ Tuck and some other members of 222 sq. Tuck decided  to go for a drive and unfortunately Van Mentz declined to go with him and stayed at the inn. Shortly after a German bomb hit the inn killing Van Mentz and 20 others.

So Far I have P9492 as ZD-W
Thanks

He flew very many, far more than your list, but the ORB only lists serials, not codes (a common occurrence.)  It's unlikely that he had his own aircraft, since others seem to have flown the same as him, when he wasn't available (on leave, perhaps?)  The numbers are:- P9360, P9469, R6628 (twice) X4280, R6837, K9939, Y6837 (I think this is a typing error for R6837), P9878, P9978, L1089 (4 times), X4089 (twice on same day), P9542 (three times), P9492 (four times), P9434, X4067 (20 times, including 5 in one day, 4 on another, and 2 on another), L1041 (7 times in 3 days), X4041, X4540 (27 times), K9947, N3046, X4610, P9516.  That took him to the end of 1940, and took me off to the reading room, for my own research; sorry i couldn't help more.
