Hello,

I am looking for information about Spitfires Mk.XVIe from 421 RCAF Squadron which were delivered to the unit from December 1944 until January 1945.
I would like to know combination: serial number - individual code letter - the name of the pilot.
At this moment I have some information see below:

SM 284 - AU-B  F/L E.S. Smith,
SM 359 - AU-D  F/L M.J. Gordon,
SM 411 - AU-E  F/O E.H. Mann,
SM 476 - AU-J   F/O O.H. Levere,
SM 252 - AU-L   F/O F.W Smith,
SM 293 - AU-Q  F/O F.W Evans,
SM 238 - AU-S  F/L W.F. Wiltshire,
SM 392 - AU-T   F/O J.F. Marsden.

I have read following books: R.Bracken - Canadian Spitfire 1 and 2, C. Shores, C. Thomas - 2nd Tactical Air Force part 1-4
but I couldn't find nothing more. Please help.
Any photos are very welcome.

Best regards

Piotr Mikos

I had a quick look, at Kew, today, and, as far as individual pilots, you're going to be doomed to disappointment, since it looks as though they flew whatever was available, e.g. S/Ldr Browne flew SM284 23/3 & 24/3, but F/Lt. Brown flew it 25/3.  F/Lt Brown flew SM359 23/3; Veenis flew SM252 15/3; W/O Clark flew SM293 23/3; Dickinson flew SM392 23/3.  On 9/3 Gellatly and Marshall both flew SM476, McCaffre & Marsden flew SM289 (Browne flew it 22/3); Nelson & Clark flew SM293, Fawthrop & Decourcy flew SM474.  The same thing happened in December 1944, and January 1945.  You'll need every page, from the O.R.B., to work out who did what, on any particular day, and just to compound the felony, the "Intelligence Officer" didn't put the individual codes into the O.R.B., either.  Sorry.
