Fixed wooden propeller to constant speed metal propeller, Merlin one stage to Griffon two stage: a great deal of weight was hung on the nose of the Spitfire over its development. How was the C.G. kept in range?

I know of a few, but there was probably a whole range.  For the wooden props, lead weights were fitted to the extreme fronts of the engine bearers (they can be seen in the photo of the production line, and Airfix fitted them on their 1/24 kit of the Mark I.  In the IX, the oxygen bottles were moved to the rear of the fuselage, near the transport joint; on the XIV, 74lbs of lead weight was fitted into the fin (this consisted of some 9.5lb blocks, which could be added, or removed, at will.

There is a saddle back near Frame 17 for weights IIRC.
