Prop spinner to cowling clearance on Spitfire (and Hurricane) Mk I's

Hello all,
I am building an RoG/Hasegawa Spitfire MkI/II. A number of drawings I am using show a gap of between 1/2 to one inch (12 to 25 mm) from the rear of the spinner to the cowling. This seems to be found only on aircraft with the Dehaviland two-speed or constant speed propellors. As for photo evidence, I have only one image that shows this. The profiles on the new Zotz Decal sheets for the Hurricane Mk I also portray this gap. Can anyone please explain this as something other than artist's license?
Cheers!
Greg
