Greetings
Is there a source online describing and listing the serial numbers of the early Rolls Royce Spitfire Mk IX conversions (bump on upper cowling)?  Any information or leads appreciated.

Thank you;

James

According to Dave Birch of the Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust, 83 Spitfire IXs left Hucknall with these makeshift cowlings. This number corresponds to the following serials of the first batches of Mk.Vs converted to Mk.lXs: AA873, A8196, AB197, AB456 to AB460, AB505, AB507, AB508, AB511, AB522,AB525, BR138 to BR143, BR369 to BR371, BR621 to BR640, BS271 to BS290, BS335 to BS354. It seems that BS501 should also be added to that number, this being retained as a trials aircraft and subsequently fitted with a Merlin 66 to become a pre-production LF.lX. Available photographs of these converted cowlings reveal that the scope of modification applied to the original Mk V sets of panels varied between aircraft. Anyway, they all had the distinctive 'bumps'.

Rolls-Royce did 285 conversions (it's likely that not all had the "carbuncle" top cowling, so it'd pay to take Mr. Birch's word) taken from all manner of serial series, and including 1 Mk.I & 1 Mk.III :-.
N3297, R6700, AA873, AB196, AB197, AB456-460, AB501, AB505, AB507, AB508, AB511, AB522, AB525, BR138-143, BR369-371, BR621-640, BS271-290, BS335-354, BS530-559, EN112-121, EN239-258, EN351-370, EN515-534, EN551-583, EN628-637, ES107, ES291, JK429, JK463, JK535, JK620, JK659, JK668, JK762, JK769, JK795, JK840, JK860, JK880, JK949, JK979, JL106, JL107, JL109-111, JL132, JL159, JL163, JL165, JL172, JL217, JL223, JL234,JL239, JL347, JL349, JL351, JL353-356, JL359, JL361, JL364, JL366, JL369, JL372, JL373, JL385, JL395, MA298, MA329, MA357, MA645, MA646, MA648,MA651, MA655, MA657.
