Spitfire Cannon Stubs/Fairings - What kind of Material?

What were the cannon stubs/fairings that were inserted into the unused outboard cannon ports on the Spitfire "c" wings? I have seen references to them being wood or rubber. Also, when the e-wing was introduced with the .50 cal in the inner cannon bay, what was used to seal the gun port? Was it tape, or something else? Thanks in advance.
